Quality Desserts a family baking success
In a couple of months, this successful family business turns "Sweet 16".


From their humble beginnings in a 180m' shed in 1992, the Smith and Lancaster-Smith family
team (Barry, Trish, Brad, Janelle, Julian and Julie) are now in a state of the art 4000m' production facility in Toowoomba, with big plans for expansion. Christmas products have been the mainstay of the business, but the family now produces a wide range of sweet bakery products for all the major retail chains and independents. Chances are, most consumers have eaten a product produced in this award winning bakery, but with contract branding, most are unaware. Julian Lancaster-Smith said, "We currently have in excess of 80 staff, with this number growing annually, but in these challenging times we are always improving our systems and processes to maintain our competitive edge and provide our customers with product that is second to none". With a fully developed food safety programme, certified to HACC~ WQA and BRC, this business is here for the long haul. When asked what is was like to compete with the big boys, Brad Smith said, "Anyone can make a product and sell it once if the price is right. Quality Desserts customers must enjoy our products, then we ensure the repeat business. That is how we achieve our growth, not only in existing markets but with new projects we undertake." The company has recently launched a new range of individually wrapped products for the hand held cake market. 40g Chocoiate, Madeira and Fruit Cake slices, as well as traditional lamingtons have been added to their portfolio, servicing the retail, route and food service arenas. Barry Smith said that dietary considerations now playa major part in any development, with this cake range meeting the new schools Smart Choices amber category. Quality Desserts Christmas products will be available to all retailers this year.
